Stereotypies Behavior in Parrots 6-21-22 4pm EST

June 21 – Targeted Aggression in Parrots

Perhaps one of the most common (and confusing and heartbreaking) behaviors in captive birds are “stereotypies.”  

Bird stereotypies can include:
-Plucking & barbing feathers
-Pacing back and forth
-Sliding a beak over certain parts of the cage over and over again
-Hanging from bars
-Excessive anting
-Excessive screaming
-Rocking back and forth
They are seemingly functionally “pointless” behaviors – but may be self-soothing mechanisms for stress, boredom or attempts to alleviate pain.

During the pandemic, my stress stereotypy was doom-scrolling Facebook. Ellie over-ants when she’s bored. Isabelle barbs if she’s super stressed, and Tillie rocks.

And 😊 Stereotypies can be recognized, understood, and improved!
